Effects of a Self-management Promotion Program using the LINE Application on Knowledge, Self-management Behaviors, and Clinical Outcomes for Newly Diagnosed Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus at Buayai Hospital, Nakhon Ratchasima province.

Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed to examine the effects of a self-management promotion program using the LINE Application on the knowledge, self-management behaviors, and clinical outcomes in new patients with type 2 diabetes at Buayai Hospital. The sample consisted of 60 newly diagnosed patients with type 2 diabetes receiving treatment at the diabetes clinic of Buayai Hospital. The sample was divided into two groups: the experimental group (n=30), which received the self-management promotion program using the LINE Application, and the control group (n=30), which received standard nursing care. The study was conducted over a period of 12 weeks. Three data collection tools were used: (1) a personal information questionnaire and clinical outcome recording form, (2) a diabetes knowledge assessment test, and (3) a self-management behavior questionnaire covering five aspects. Chi-square tests and Fisher’s exact tests were used to compare the personal data of the control and experimental groups. Comparison of the average scores for diabetes knowledge, self-management behaviors, and clinical outcomes was studied using paired t-tests and independent t-tests.

There were two significant research findings.  1) The results of the within-group comparison before and after the experiment showed that the means and standard deviations for diabetes knowledge and self-management behavior in stress management in the experimental group were statistically significantly different (p<.05). Moreover, their blood sugar levels and average hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) levels significantly decreased with statistical significance (p<.05) . 2) The results of the comparison between the control group and the experimental group after the experiment showed that the means and standard deviations of self-management behavior regarding dietary control were significantly different at p<.05. However, the means and standard deviations for diabetes knowledge, other self-management behaviors, blood sugar levels, and average HbA1C levels were not statistically different (p>.05). The self-management promotion program using the LINE Application can be applied in diabetes clinics to enhance appropriate behavioral modifications which could help patients control their blood sugar.
