This study is descriptive predictive research which aimed to examine the levels of the factors, relationships, and predictors of health literacy related to type 2 diabetes among village health volunteers (VHVs) in Nakhon Phanom Province. The sample size was calculated using statistical software which determined the appropriate size to be 107 participants who were then selected through multistage sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire consisting of five sections: (1) personal information, (2) personal competence, (3) social support, (4) motivation for performing VHV duties, and (5) health literacy related to diabetes. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of sections 2 through 5 of the questionnaire were .72, .79, .95 and .78, respectively. Data were analyzed using Independent t- tests, one-way ANOVAs, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression analysis.
The research findings indicated that most VHVs had high levels of personal competence, social support, motivation for performing VHV duties, and health literacy related to type 2 diabetes. Income and occupation had a low positive correlation with VHVs’ health literacy regarding diabetes, with statistical significance at the .05 level. Personal competence and social support had a low positive correlation with VHVs’ health literacy regarding type 2 diabetes, with statistical significance at the .001 level. Motivation for performing VHV duties had a strong positive correlation with VHVs’ health literacy regarding type 2 diabetes, with statistical significance at the .001 level. Five factors were identified as predictors of VHVs' health literacy regarding diabetes: (1) motivation for performing VHV duties, (2) occupation as a trader, (3) single marital status, (4) income, and (5) occupation as an employee. These factors collectively predicted 60% of the variance in health literacy regarding diabetes.
