Abstract

This descriptive predictive research aimed to examine the relationships between the relevant factors and the predictive power of performance of village health volunteers in implementing the guidelines for the prevention and control of pulmonary tuberculosis in the community. A total of 112 village health volunteers were selected through stratified sampling. The instruments included: 1) a personal information questionnaire, 2) a knowledge test on the prevention and control of pulmonary tuberculosis, 3) an attitude questionnaire,  4) a social support questionnaire, and 5) a job performance questionnaire. Content validity ranged from .67 to 1. The reliability of the knowledge test, as measured by the KR-20 method, was .83, and the Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the entire questionnaire was .86. Data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression analysis.

The results showed that social support was found to have a strong positive correlation with the performance of village health volunteers in regard to implementing the guidelines for the prevention and control of pulmonary tuberculosis in the community, with a statistical significance at the .001 level. Social support was also identified as the only predictor of performance of village health volunteers, accounting for 28.30% of the variance. The results of this study demonstrate that social support provided to village health volunteers enhances their effectiveness implementing the guidelines for the prevention and control of pulmonary tuberculosis in the community.
