This quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effects of game-based learning management through the “Marriage, Choosing a Partner” Game and the Line Official Account 'Thalass Daily' on knowledge and attitudes towards preventing pregnancy with thalassemia among nursing students. The sample consisted of 66 first-year nursing students at Boromarajonani College of Nursing Khon Kaen, who met the inclusion criteria. They were divided into an experimental group and a control group, with 33 participants in each group. The experimental group participated in the game-based learning program, which included the activities in the "Marriage Choosing a Partner" interactive game and the Line official account for "Thalas Daily", over a period of one week. The control group received information about thalassemia and the prevention of thalassemia-affected pregnancies through self-directed learning. The knowledge assessment and the attitude questionnaires concerning the prevention of thalassemia in infants were used for data collection. The KR-20 reliability of the knowledge assessment was .75, and the Cronbach' alpha coefficient showed the reliability of the attitude questionnaire was .80. The research and data collection were conducted from September to October 2023. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, and independent t-tests.
The research results revealed that, after participating in the learning program, the experimental group showed a statistically significant increase in mean knowledge scores, and mean attitude scores regarding the prevention of pregnancies with infants with thalassemia compared to before participating in the program (p<.05). After participating in the program, the experimental group had significantly higher mean knowledge and attitude scores regarding the prevention of pregnancies with infants with thalassemia than that of the control group (p<.05). The findings of the study suggests that the game-based learning program can be implemented to further promote knowledge and attitudes toward the prevention of thalassemia in infants among nursing students.
