Abstract

Promoting postoperative recovery is one aspect of care for ensuring patient safety and preventing complications. This quasi-experimental, two-group, posttest-only study aimed to examine the effects of a postoperative recovery program on recovery outcomes among patients who underwent exploratory laparotomy (EL) at Chomthong Hospital, Chiang Mai province, Thailand. Participants were selected using purposive sampling based on specified criteria, with 15 participants in each group. The control group received standard nursing care and the experimental group received a postoperative rehabilitation program for patients who have undergone open abdominal surgery within the past 72 hours. Data were collected from December 2023 to April 2024. The research instruments included a postoperative recovery program for patients who underwent EL, as well as a pre-and post-operative practice handout. The data collection tools consisted of a demographic and health recording form, a postoperative patient symptoms and activities monitoring form, and a postoperative recovery assessment form. The postoperative recovery assessment form was tested for reliability and demonstrated a Cronbach’s coefficient alpha of .86. Data were analyzed using the SPSS program and employed descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney U-test.

The results showed that the experimental group had the highest level of recovery and had a statistically significantly higher postoperative recovery score compared to the control group (p < .001). These findings showed that the postoperative recovery program can promote recovery in patients following EL. Therefore, this program should be extended to nurses and other relevant healthcare providers to facilitate its broader implementation to enhance patient recovery after exploratory laparotomy.
