Abstract

This research and development study aimed to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a learning model for infection control ward nurses (ICWNs) based on the 70:20:10 concept. The study participants consisted of 73 ICWNs at Chaiyaphum Hospital in Chaiyaphum, Thailand. The tools used in the study consisted of  1) a Learning model based on the 70:20:10 concept which had the quality of its content assessed by five experts and the average item-objective congruence (IOC) index was determined to be 0.85. 2) Data collection tools included a) semi-structured interviews, b) knowledge tests (assessment with the Kuder-Richardson formula showed that the knowledge test had an acceptable reliability coefficient of 0.72), c) hospital infection surveillance forms, and d) satisfaction assessment forms. The content validity index values for the hospital infection surveillance forms and the satisfaction assessment forms were 0.80 and 0.87, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Z-test statistics, and paired t-test statistics.

The study found that employing an interventional learning model that was developed based on the 70:20:10 learning model effectively improved the infection surveillance competencies of ICWNs and  it consisted of ten activities: 1) self-surveillance, 2) learning from site visits outside the field, 3) learning with experts, 4) job rotation, 5) becoming an internal lecturer, 6) creating a mentor system, 7) creating a coach system, 8) providing counseling, 9) academic training, and 10) online learning. The effectiveness of using the learning model showed that: 1) the knowledge of the ICWNs increased significantly (p < .001), the efficiency of surveillance increased significantly (p < .05), and the ICWNs were highly satisfied with the learning model. Therefore, the 70:20:10 concept can be used to develop educational programs to promote learning and develop the competencies of personnel in the organization more efficiently in the future.
