Abstract

This descriptive cross-sectional study aimed to examine the levels 1) of health literacy and 2) coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) preventive behavior, and 3) the relationship between personal factors, health literacy, and COVID-19 preventive behavior  among 294 high school students in Udon Thani Province. This study utilized a multistage random sampling method. Data collection took place from May to June 2022. The research instruments were questionnaires composed of items regarding personal information, health literacy, and COVID-19 behavior. The content validity index (CVI) of the health literacy and preventive behavior questionnaires were 0.88 and 0.91, respectively, and their Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were 0.94 and 0.90, respectively. The data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation coefficients.

The research findings revealed that students had a good overall health literacy level, as well as for COVID-19 preventive behavior. Health literacy was positively correlated with COVID-19 preventive behavior            (p< .05). Having a caregiver had a significantly negative correlation with health literacy (p < .05). A history of family members contracting COVID-19 and a history of vaccination among the students were significantly positively correlated with COVID-19 preventive behavior (p<.05, < .01). Therefore, nurses, healthcare professionals, and related organizations should promote health literacy among students and parents, as well as provide knowledge about diseases and disease prevention.
