Abstract

The three objectives of this Research and Development project were 1) to study the situations, problems, and obstacles in Emergency Care for Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), 2) to develop a self-learning package for emergency care, and 3) to study the results of the developed self-Learning package according to the ADDIE Model. The sample group was executives, emergency medicine officers, and emergency medical responders who were selected by purposive sampling based on inclusion criteria. The tools used in the study consisted of a semi-structured interview, knowledge tests and satisfaction assessment forms, and the newly developed self-learning package.  Data were collected by document and data-based information systems study, interviews, self-report assessments on the self-learning package’s quality, a knowledge test, and satisfaction assessment between December 2022 and July 2023. The study divided into 3 phases. Phase 1, Analysis and Situation Assessment, was collecting data from the reporting system and conducting interviews from December 2022 to January 2023. Phase 2 Design and Development was carried out in February and April 2023. Phase 3, Implementation and Evaluation, was conducted from May to July 2023. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, sample's knowledge before and after using the self-learning package were compared by using pair t-test, and the qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis.

The results of the study showed that, in the first phase, the most commonly provided emergency care services of EMRs were related to Traffic accidents. Problems and obstacles of the operations encountered were limited opportunities to attend available training due to time limitations and the desire to have more knowledge and lessons to improve using information technology platforms. Based on the results of the first phase, the e-Book, a Self-Learning Package on Emergency Care for Emergency Medical Responders (Emergency Care SLP for EMRs), consisting of contents, images, and videos published via QR Code was developed. In the third phase for implementation and evaluation, the Emergency Care SLP for EMRs quality was assessed by experts who rated them as good to very good. The Emergency care SLP for EMRs was trialed with 30 EMRs, a different group from the experimental group, which showed that their average knowledge scores increased. After revision, the Emergency Care SLP for EMRs was implemented with 50 EMRs and found that their average knowledge score increased statistically significantly at p < .01, compared to pre-test and their satisfaction scores were very good.
