Abstract

The spread of pulmonary tuberculosis has been increasing among the older adults and individuals with weakened immune systems, resulting in longer treatment durations. This may lead to complications and higher treatment costs. Nurses play a crucial role in caring for patients with tuberculosis, as well as prevention and monitoring of the spread of the disease and providing guidance upon patient discharge. Therefore, nurses must possess excellent knowledge and understanding about pulmonary tuberculosis.

The purpose of this article is to present a case study of the nursing care for patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. The Fluid balance, Aeration, Nutrition, Communication, Activity, and Stimulation, FANCAS assessment tool was used to identify the life-threatening problems being faced by patients. This information was collected to determine the related nursing problems, develop nursing care plans, and provide patient care. Additionally, long-term discharge planning was established to reduce the severity and complications of the disease, shorten hospital stays, decrease healthcare costs, and promote consistent medication adherence related to the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis, while preventing drug resistance from occurring.
