This study utilized a quasi-experimental design. Specifically, a one-group pretest-posttest design. The purposes of the study were to investigate the impact of the Nursing Competency Development program on HIV testing, incorporating key messages and role plays, as well as to evaluate the satisfaction level of the participating nurses. The sample consisted of 50 professional nurses from community hospitals and Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital in Chiang Rai, Thailand who had a minimum of one year of experience in HIV Counseling and Testing. The program was evaluated by assessing the perception of coverage and completion of HIV blood test consultations and recognition of counseling competencies. During the trial phase, nurses received counseling to enhance their capacity in HIV testing counseling using key messages and role plays with a follow-up period of 1 month after program completion. Their perception of coverage and completion of HIV blood test consultations, as well as the recognition of counseling competencies, were evaluated. Data analysis involved comparing the coverage and completeness of HIV blood test consultations before and after participating in the developmental program using paired t-tests.. Paired t-tests were also employed to compare counseling potential for HIV blood tests before and after the program. Satisfaction and utilization were described using descriptive statistics.
The results indicated a significant increase in the coverage and completeness scores of HIV blood test consultations after completing the program among the 50 nurses specializing in HIV/AIDS Counseling. Furthermore, counseling potential for HIV blood tests tended to increase after participating in the program, with a statistical significance at p-value < .0001. Additionally, the satisfaction with the project and its utilization were reported to be high.
