Abstract

This study was a quasi-experimental, one-group pretest-posttest design. The objective of this study was to explore the effects of a self-help group program on the knowledge, attitude, and caring behaviors of caregivers providing care to children with physical impairments. The participants were 30 primary caregivers of children with physical impairments at the Udon Thani Special Education Center and were selected by purposive sampling.    The research instruments were: 1) The research intervention, which was a 12- week self-help group program with 4 different types of support activities: sharing emotional and social support; information; education and skill development; and advocacy. 2) The research instrument for collecting the data from caregivers was the knowledge, attitude, and caring behavior questionnaire. Content validity was examined by three experts.  The content validity index for this questionnaire was 0.88 and its Cronbach's alpha was 0.84. Data analysis was performed using percentages, means, standard deviations, and paired-sample t-tests.

The results of this research showed that, compared to before the intervention, the mean scores for the knowledge, attitudes, and care behavior of caregivers for children with physical impairments were significantly higher (p<.001). Therefore, nurses and health care teams should establish self-help group for caregivers of children with physical impairments in the community. Moreover, the program can be adapted to be used in the patients having different illness in order to improve the patient’s quality of life and to promote the quality of life of their caregivers who will be able to improve their knowledge and learn appropriate attitudes and behaviors.
