Nurses’ roles in Suicide Prevention among Adolescents

Suicide among adolescents is a major public health problem. Research has shown that suicide is the leading cause of death among adolescents world-wide and that the suicide rate among adolescents continues to grow every year.Therefore, it has wide-ranged impacts on the health and economy of individuals, families, and nations. Adolescent suicide has become a vital public health issue that must be addressed with effective preventative measures through the cooperation of relevant personnel. This article aims to present the most current and up-to-date knowledge about the incidence of suicide among adolescents, its causes and risk factors, warning signs, prevention, and the nursing role in suicide prevention among adolescents, its focus is on the role of nurses in suicide prevention, including screening, assessment and care, and management in the early stage. Nurses are medical professionals which play an important role in the prevention of adolescent suicide. Having effective prevention measures that nurses can implement will help reduce the escalating severity and losses due to adolescent suicide and is an important part of helping to mitigate and solve the problems leading to suicide among adolescents. Moreover, effective prevention measures can be used to help adolescents to grow into adulthood and be able to have a high quality of life and make contributions to the country.
