Enhancing the Resilience of Professional Nurses

Abstract

Professional nurses are health personnel who are important due to their role of  continuously providing direct contact care for patients. Because of the workloads, duties, and responsibilities of professional nurses, they are at a high risk of experiencing stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue, which in turn can increase the risk of nursing care errors occurring. These factors can impact their patients’ safety and quality of life. Professional nurses may also develop physical and psychological illnesses. These may result in professional nurses relocating, changing jobs, or even resigning and leaving nursing. To prevent the multitude of potential impacts on professional nurses, quality of care provided to patients, medical expense budgets, and imbalances within the health care system, it is necessary to enhance the resilience of professional nurses. This article aims to help increase professional nurses and nursing leaders understanding, awareness, and knowledge about the benefits of enhancing resilience. This article also describes guidelines for enhancing the resilience of nursing professionals as well as presenting the 1) definitions of resilience, 2) related concepts of resilience, 3) resilience among nursing professionals, and 4) guidelines to promote resilience of own nurses and from nurses’ leaders in workplaces. Furthermore, enhancing the resilience of professional nurses would beneficial for retaining professional nurses within the health care system, developing the nursing profession, increasing the effectiveness of providing nursing care, and improving the quality of life for both professional nurses and patients.
