Effects of a Medication Cooperation Promotion Program on Medication Taking Behaviors in Patients with Schizophrenia

Abstract

This research was a quasi-experimental research with a two-group, pretest-posttest design. The purpose of this research was to study the effect of a medication cooperation promotion program on the medication taking behavior of schizophrenia patients. The sample consisted of 44 schizophrenia patients from a community hospital in Chaiyaphum Province, Thialand. The sample was divided into experimental and control groups containing 22 subjects each. The experimental group received a 12-weeks program to promote drug adherence and the control group received normal nursing care. The research instruments consisted of 1) the Program to Promote Medication Taking Cooperation in Schizophrenia Patients , 2) a brain psychiatric rating scale (BPRS.) and 3) the Medication Taking BehaviorScale according to Treatment Criteria.The content accuracy index of the Medication Taking Behavior Scale According to Treatment Criteria instrument was .90 and the reliability, using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, was .87. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-tests.
The results showed that: 1) after the of drug use mediction cooperation promotion program, the experimental group had a significantly (p = .001) different mean score for medication-taking behavioral cooperation than before receiving the program and 2) After the end of the program, the mean scores for medication adherence for the experimental group were significantly different from those of the control group (p<.01). The findings suggested that the medication cooperation promotion program had a significantly positive effect on the medication-taking behavior of schizophrenic patients. Relevant agencies should continue to implement this program in community hospital psychiatric clinics.
