The Relationships Among Coping, Social Support, and Quality of Life among Postpartum Adolescent Mothers in Bothong district, Chonburi province

Pregnancy in adolescents is national health problem and has an effect on young mothers who are not well-prepared, or ready, to care for themselves and their baby. This study aimed to explore the relationships between coping with problems, social support, and quality of life in postpartum adolescent mothers, and determine the factors predicting quality of life among postpartum adolescent mothers in Bothong district, Chonburi province. Researchers recruited 122 postpartum adolescent mothers into the study. Data were collected using a three-part self-administered questionnaire, comprising of coping with problems, social support, and quality of life questionnaires in relation to adolescent pregnancy. All data were analyzed using Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression analysis.
Results showed 66.39% of postpartum adolescent mothers had a moderate quality of life. Coping with problems (r = .568) and social support (r= .726) were significantly associated p< 0.01 with the quality of life of postpartum the adolescent mothers respectively. In addition, coping with problems and social support could jointly explain 37% of the variance in quality of life among postpartum adolescent mothers (R2 = .370).
The findings of this study suggest that postpartum adolescent mothers should be encouraged to cope with problems, whether they be physical, emotional, or mental health problems, foster relationships and communication among their family, and seek social support from family, peers, teachers, and schools. Moreover, the government should devise and promote policies to improve the quality of adolescent life, especially for adolescents who are unprepared pregnancy, to enhance their future quality of life.
