The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was to determine the effects of using the clinical nursing practice guideline (CNPG) for reducing preoperative anxiety and increasing cooperation in children during induction of general anesthesia. Thirty-six participants were purposively selected according to the criteria, including age between 3 and 10 years and undergoing elective surgery at Sunpasitthiprasong Hospital, Ubon Ratchathani. Researchers equally randomized the participants into the experimental and the control group, each 18 per group. In the waiting area and during induction of anesthesia, the control group received routine nursing care for reducing preoperative anxiety and increasing cooperation in induction of anesthesia, while the experimental group received nursing care based on the evidence-based CNPG for reducing preoperative anxiety and increasing cooperation during induction of general anesthesia. The research tools were 1) The CNPG 2) The modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale-Short Form was used to access the children’s anxiety and 3) The Pediatric Anesthesia Behavior was used to access the children’s cooperation during induction of general anesthesia. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, T-test Independent, Fisher’s exact test, Chi-square test and Mann-Whitney U test.
The results revealed that 1) the preoperative anxiety score of children in the experimental group were significant less than children in the control group (p < .01). 2) the cooperative score of children in the experimental group were significantly higher than the score of children in the control group (p < .01).
