Guideline Development to Promote Self-management for Uncontrolled Diabetes Patients Using Community Participation

This action research aimed to analyze the situation and to develop guidelines to promote self-management for uncontrolled diabetes patients using community participation. A total of 40 participants were recruited in the specific study, consisting of 14 patients with uncontrolled glycemic diabetes, 14 caregivers, 8 village health volunteers, 2 community leaders, 1 sub-district administrative organization member, and 1 public health worker. The tools used in the research consisted of in-depth interview, group discussion, the reflection brainstorming guidelines, and non-participatory observation guidelines. Quantitative data were analyzed by using frequency, mean, percentage, and qualitative data were analyzed by using content analysis.
Results: Before development, uncontrolled diabetes patients were unable to manage themselves appropriately in 3 health behaviors, namely 1) diet 2) exercise 3) stress management. The development results showed that; the guidelines for promoting self-management of uncontrolled diabetes patients by community participation are divided into 2 approaches: 1) guidelines for diabetics and their families and 2) guidelines for community support teams. After implementing the promotion guidelines, diabetic patients had better glycemic control (28.58%) and had better health behaviors (85.71%).
Recommendation: In order to better assess glycemic control behaviors and clinical outcomes, the longer period of research is recommended.
