Keywords:

This descriptive research studied the situation, elderly care, problems and care needs of the elderly afflicted with chronic illness and bedridden during the COVID-19 outbreak of community in Udonthani province. The sample consisted of 70 participants, which included 30 key informants (12 elderly caregivers and 18 community leaders) and 40 secondary informants (the elderly with chronic illness and bedridden). Both quantitative and qualitative data was collected through the use of in-depth interviews, focus groups and participant observation which were approved by the experts. Descriptive and content analysis were utilized to analyze the data.
The results: Of the 40 elderlies, 9 had Ankyloses (22.5%) and 5 had pressure sores (12.5%). Of the 12 family caregivers, 3 lacked knowledge and essential skills (25%), while 4 improperly managed infectious waste (33.33%). The community perceived the bedridden elderly as a high-risk group for contracting COVID-19 due to physical weakness and low immune resistance. Elderly care, family member provided little care for the elderly (16.67%). The elderly also received care from community sources; local government caregivers, healthcare providers, village health volunteers and community. Problems of the elderly care found the activity of each group was complicated. Families had less self-reliance and tended to depend on the community’s caregivers. Additionally, the caregivers lack of knowledge, essential skill, welfare benefits and availability of essential equipment. Needs of the elderly care include enhanced family support, a multidisciplinary team to help navigate the problems, as well as essential equipment and obtain the appropriate welfare. The results suggest that the related agencies should strive to develop community care service for the elderly, assign clear caregiver roles and support community needs.
