Empowerment of One Higher Education Institute to Increase Potential in Managing Overweight and Obesity Problem among Students

Abstract

This action research aimed to study the health behaviors of students with overweight and obesity, their relevant factors and to develop the empowerment process in order to increase the potential of an institution of higher education in taking care of students with overweight and obesity. Gibson’s 1995 model was the theoretical framework to empowerment. The volunteers in the project were 15 students with overweight and obesity and 24 associates. The tools utilized herein included the guideline for in-dept interview, focus group discussion, brainstorming, and observations. The data were analyzed using quantitative data analysis with a frequency and percentage and qualitative data analysis based on content analysis. This research had been conducted from June 2019 to November 2020.

The findings revealed that students’ health behaviors and the factors enhanced students with overweight and obesity were from various factors including, the personal factor, the sociocultural factor, the environmental factor, and the health service system factor. The development of an empowerment process in order to increase the potential of an institution of higher education in taking care of students with overweight and obesity comprised of three key systems: 1) screening system. 2) health care system; and 3) the follow-up system. These three key systems were designed to develop planning, doing, and evaluating as the guideline for the management of overweight and obesity of students in this higher education institution.
