The Self-management Support with Use of Peer Support Groups among Overweight Adolescents to Prevent Chronic Kidney Disease: Case Study of a Secondary School in Surin Province

Abstract

This research aimed to study the effects of self-management support programs in conjunction with the use of peer support groups among overweight adolescents to prevent chronic kidney disease. The sample group was divided into a simple randomized trial and control group 47 people each. The experimental group received a 6-month self-management support program in conjunction with the use of a peer support groups. 1) Knowledge about chronic kidney disease 2) Reading labels and dietary choices 3) Exercise 4) Emotion management and 5) Peer support groups. The control group received regular health promotion. Data were collected by using a questionnaire; Knowledge of chronic kidney disease prevention and chronic kidney disease prevention behavior. The confidence values were 0.82 and 0.84 and Assessment form of BMI, waist circumference and blood pressure level. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square, and independent t-test.

            The results of the research were as follows: The experimental group participated in self-management support together with the use of a peer support group of adolescents to prevent chronic kidney disease. The mean score of chronic kidney disease prevention behavior, Clinical outcomes and knowledge of chronic kidney disease prevention higher than the control group was statistically significant (P<.05)

            Conclusions: Self-management support with using of peer support among overweight adolescents affected chronic kidney disease prevention behaviors.
