Patients’ Anxiety before Abdominal Surgery and Nurses’ Roles on Pre-Abdominal Surgery Preparing in Borlikhamxay Hospital, Lao PDR

The descriptive study were to study anxiety levels among patients undergoing Exploratory laparotomy, the role of nurses in preparing patients for Exploratory laparotomy, and to study the relationship between personal factors and anxiety. The study was conducted in Borlikhamsay hospital, Lao PDR. The sample was collected from 56 patients, divided into 48 patients, 8 nurses who were selected individually by using the state anxiety questionnaire of Spielberger (1970) And analyze the percentage data Mean and standard deviation, and use the statistical qui-square test.
The results showed that 58.3% of the sample had a moderate level of anxiety, 14.6% had a high level of anxiety. In addition, Personal factors with significant statistical significance are occupations (= 16.96, p = 0.031) and surgical experience (= 6.55, p = 0.038).The role of nurses in preparing before surgery is physical preparation, psychological and emotional preparation, teaching post-operative practice, family preparation, and preparing relevant documents.
The researcher proposed that nurses prepare patients before surgery to cover both physically and mentally with consideration of occupation and surgical experience differences and develop innovations to promote the mental state of patients before surgery.
