Abstract

The foot care behavior is important in preventing diabetic foot ulcer. The purposes of this study were to assess foot care behaviors and examine the influences of foot care knowledge, health literacy, perceived self-efficacy in foot care, and family support on foot care behaviors among type II diabetes mellitus at risk for diabetic foot ulcer. Eighty five samples were randomly selected from diabetic out-patient clinic at Surin Hospital, Surin Province. Research instruments consisted of the demographic data questionnaire, the foot care knowledge questionnaire, the health literacy questionnaire, the foot care self-efficacy questionnaire, and the family support questionnaire. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis.

The results showed that overall foot care behaviors of sample were at a moderate level (M = 68.50, SD = 13.58). All variables including foot care knowledge, health literacy, perceived self-efficacy in foot care and family support were significantly predicted foot care behaviors and explained 28 percents of variance (p < .001). Factors influencing foot care behaviors were perceived self-efficacy in foot care and family support (β = .37, p < .001 and β = .34, p < .01 respectively).

Results of this study suggest that development of nursing intervention focuses on enhancing self-efficacy in foot care with family involvement could promote foot care behaviors among type 2 diabetes at risk for diabetic foot ulcer.
