The aims of this descriptive study were to study patient safety culture as perceived by registered nurses and to compare patient safety culture as perceived by registered nurses at each competency level. The sample comprised of 470 registered nurses working at Srinagarind Hospital, Thailand recruited via stratified random sampling. The sample was grouped according to years of work experience, i.e. nurses demonstrating 1-2 years, 3-4 years, 5-7 years 8-10 years, and more than 10 years of work history. A questionnaire on patient safety culture perception was used to collect data. The data were analyzed in terms of mean, standard deviation, 95% CI, and One-way ANOVA .
The results of this study revealed that:
- The overall perception of safety culture among nurses was at a high level (xˉ =3.78, S.D.=0.39 ,95 % CI =3.75-3.82). Also, patient safety culture perception in each aspect was at a high level, including working area/department. ( xˉ = 3.89, S.D.= 0.43, 95 % CI =3.85-3.95), hospital (xˉ = 3.58, S.D.= 0.50, 95 % CI =3.53-3.62), and outcomes ( xˉ = 3.72, S.D.= 0.43, 95 % CI =3.66-3.79).
- Results comparison among groups found that overall patient safety culture perceived by nurses at each competency level was not significantly different (P-value>0.05).
Recommendation: Knowledge and awareness of safety culture should be promoted via a prescription of performance development plan or training at all RN levels. Additionally, insufficient staffing and unsuitable working hours should of concern.
