The purpose of this descriptive research was to investigate the perceived succession planning for nursing administration of Srinagarind Hospital in professional nurses at the operational level and at the nursing administration level. The samples consisted of 428 professional nurses at the operational level who have been working for 5 years and over and 103 professional nurses at the nursing administration level. The instrument was the questionnaire on succession planning for nursing administrators at Srinagarind Hospital for professional nurses at the operational level and at the nursing administration level. The content validation was verified by 5 experts. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was employed to check the reliability of the questionnaire. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of the questionnaire for the professional nurses at the operational level was .94 and that of for the professional nurses at the nursing administration level was .95, respectively. The data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and Independent t-test. The research found that the overall perceived succession planning for nursing administration of the professional nurses at the operational level was at a moderate level (= 3.36, S.D. = 0.63) while that of the professional nurses at the nursing administration level was at a high level ( = 3.61, S.D. = 0.63). The perceived succession planning for nursing administration of the professional nurses at the operational level and the professional nurses at the nursing administration level was different with statistical significance at the 0.05 level (P= 0.001).
Recommendations: Nursing administrators should promote concrete and continuous policy of succession planning and participation of professional nurses at the operational level in the implementation of succession planning program in order to effectively prepare them for having nursing administrative positions.
