ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างความรู้เกี่ยวกับทักษะการตรวจมะเร็งเต้านมด้วยตนเองและพฤติกรรมเกี่ยวกับการตรวจเต้านมด้วยตนเองของสตรีวัยผู้ใหญ่ในเขตเทศบาลนครอุบลราชธานี จังหวัดอุบลราชธานี Knowledge of kills and Breast self-examination behavior among Woman of municipal area in Ubon Ratchathani

Abstract

The objectives of this descriptive research were to study the knowledge of skills and behaviors regarding breast self-examination (BSE); and to determine the relationship among knowledge of skills and behaviors regarding BSE of adult women in Ubon Ratchathani Municipality.  Simple random sampling was used to recruit the sample of 110 women.  An instrument that included 3 parts: 1) Demographic characteristics, 2) Knowledge of skills regarding BSE, and 3) BSE Behavior was validated by a group of expert.  The Cronbach's alpha reliability values of knowledge of skills and BSE behavior were 0.72, 0.72 and 0.75, respectively.  Data were collected from August, 2016 to January, 2017.  Descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation coefficient were used for data analysis. 

Results showed that women had low levels of BSE knowledge of skills (57.75%).  Two third of women have ever performed BSE (66.40%) while the rest number has never performed BSE (33.60%).  The women did not perform routine BSE (54.54%).  BSE behaviors were found to be an inappropriate level (52.40%).  Moreover, there was a statistically significant correlation between BSE knowledge of skills and BSE behavior (r= .405, p< .05).

This study pointed that performing breast self-exams at least once a month was low although BSE benefits from mass media campaigns was recommended. Therefore, there are suggestions to promote the knowledge about BSE methods to stimulate for women to understand breast cancer knowledge and routine BSE campaigns to increase the awareness regarding the importance of  regular BSE and the hazard of breast cancer should be carried out.
