The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to examine the effects of a nursing practice guideline for diabetic patients hospitalized with hypoglycemia on recurrent hypoglycemia, length of stay and readmission with hypoglycemia. The samples were type 2 diabetic patients hospitalized with hypoglycemia. Sampling selection used simple random sampling. The experimental group (n=38) received a nursing practice guideline for diabetic patients hospitalized with hypoglycemia while the data from the control group (n=38) who received conventional nursing care was collected retrospectively. The assessment tools for this research consisted of a demographic data and clinical characteristics of hypoglycemic diabetic patients and documentation of nursing outcomes. The experimental tools which were developed from literate review for this research. After the guideline was established, the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation II criteria was used to evaluate its quality. The guideline’s content validity was examined by the five experts and data were analyzed using the chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test to analyze proportions and Mann-Whitney U Test for means. The results of the study were as follows:
- Recurrent hypoglycemia of the experimental group after receiving a nursing practice guideline for diabetic patients was significantly lower than that in the control group (p<0.001)
- Length of stay of the experimental group after receiving a nursing practice guideline for diabetic patients was significantly lower than that in the control group (p=0.034)
- Readmission with hypoglycemia of the experimental group after receiving a nursing practice guideline for diabetic patients was not found to be significantly different from that of the control group (p=0.493)
