Abstract

This predictive study aimed to examine 1) the level of transcultural nursing competency 2) predictive factors as personal factor and work environment factor on transcultural nursing competency of Registered Nurses (RNs) working in Srinagarind Hospital, Faculty of Medicine,  Khon Kaen University. A study sample comprised 352 RNs with working experience more than 1 year selected by using a stratified random sampling technique. Research instruments were questionnaires asking for personal factor (demographic data), work environment factor having four components, and transcultural nursing competency factor having eight components. All questionnaire contents were validated by five experts. The reliability testing of the work environment and transcultural nursing competency questionnaires were done by computing the Cronbach’s Alpha Reliability Coefficient which were 0.97 and 0.98, respectively. Data were analyzed by using the standardized SPSS statistical program, reported in terms of frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The Stepwise Multiple Regression were done to examine the predictive factors. Results indicated that: 1) overall, transcultural nursing competency of RNs at Srinagarind hospital was at a good level (=3.60, S.D. =0.86), 2) variables significantly predicted transcultural nursing competency of RNs working in Srinagarind hospital at .05 level were the work environment factor (physical environment and colleagues), and the personal factor (level of education). These factors together explained and accounted for 28.80 percent of variance in transcultural nursing competency. This study suggested that nurse administrators should develop physical environment such as guideposts with different languages, prepare translational services of different languages with enough translators. Regarding the colleague factor, nurse administrators should support RNs: to participate in workshops of competency development in essential languages, a platform of sharing experiences of transcultural care among nursing staff, and to continue their nursing educations in an advanced level.
