ปัจจัยที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับพฤติกรรมของเจ้าของสุนัขในการป้องกันโรคพิษสุนัขบ้า อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดบุรีรัมย์ Factors associated with dog owner’s behavior on rabies prevention, Muang district, Buriram province

Abstract

This research was an analytically cross-sectional study with the purpose to investigate and compare the factors related to dog owners’ behavior in rabies prevention in Muang district, Buriram province. The two-stage cluster sampling method was employed in this research. A questionnaire was used with 401 informants during March-May 2017. The data obtained were analyzed by using percentage, mean, standard deviation, and first and third quartile values. Moreover, relationships with multiple factors were analyzed by using Multiple logistic regression statistics at the significance level of 0.05. The research results revealed that the factors of dog raising in a restricted area had been associated with appropriate behavior for preventing rabies at the statistically significant level (OR_adj = 4.00 , 95% CI : = 2.36 - 6.80, p-value < 0.001). For the predisposing factors, adequate knowledge and appropriate attitude had been associated with appropriate behavior for preventing rabies at the statistically significant level (OR_adj = 1.73 , 95% CI : 1.01 - 2.95,  p-value  = 0.046 ; OR_adj = 3.48 , 95% CI : 2.00 - 6.07,  p-value < 0.001). The enabling factors had been associated with appropriate behavior for preventing rabies at the statistically significant level (OR_adj = 2.15 , 95% CI = 1.23 - 3.75,  p-value = 0.007). And the reinforcing factors had also been associated with appropriate behavior for preventing rabies at the statistically significant level (OR_adj= 2.21, 95% CI = 1.29 - 3.79,  p-value = 0.004). The following suggestions were made: Dog owners should keep their dogs at a restricted area by not letting the dogs go alone in a community.  The relevant persons should support the dog owners to access helpful and supplementary factors easily. They should be encouraged to have right knowledge and appropriate attitudes for preventing rabies via different channels.
