Abstract
Depression and impulsivity among adolescents in juvenile training centers may be caused by negative thoughts, irrational thoughts, the lack of important social skills, and especially the lack of self-control. Helping these youths to reduce their depression and impulsivity is important. This quasi-experimental research was designed to study the effectiveness of cognitive and behavioral therapy programs on the depression and impulsivity among adolescents in juvenile training centers. Sixty randomly-selected adolescents in these centers in Bangkok and vicinity areas exhibited moderate to severe depression and moderate impulsivity. These were randomly assigned to either the experimental or control group. Thirty samples in the experimental group received ten sessions of the cognitive and behavioral therapy program and the usual care in the juvenile training center. Thirty samples in the control group received knowledge about depression and impulsivity and the usual care in the juvenile training center. Program evaluation using a self-reported questionnaire was conducted 3 times: before the program began, immediately after program completion, and four weeks after program completion. The effects of the program were determined by repeated measure ANOVA and t-test.
The results showed that the mean scores for depression and the mean scores for the impulsivity in the experimental group were lower statistically significant across the two times of evaluation after program completion. Additionally, the mean scores for the experimental group were significantly lower than those of the control group (p<.05).
The results of this study suggest that this program can reduce depression and impulsivity among adolescents in juvenile training centers and should be extended in further study using more samples.
