Nursing Students’ Perceptions toward Nurse Instructors Teaching for Promoting the Cultural Competence: The Construct
Abstract
This study aimed to test construct validity of the Instrument of Nursing Students’ Perceptions toward Teaching of Nurse Instructors for Promoting the Cultural Competence of Nursing Students. The first step, constructed questionnaire from literature review, collected data from 2 focus groups of 24 nursing instructors. Findings performed operational definitions in theory courses were 11 items and practicum courses were 13 items with 5 point Likert-like scale. The second step was teste the construct validity. Firstly, test the content validity by 3 experts obtained the Content Validity Index .85 of theory courses and .82 of practicum courses. Secondly, examination the constructed validity of theory course items on samples, 378 nursing students of Boromarajonani College of Nursing., Phraputtabaht. The principle component factor analysis with varimax rotation used to factor loadings for the scale items were high on four factors; support the cultural encounter, cultural knowledge, cultural awareness, and analysis of the stereotype. It was explaining 68.92 % of variance. The internal consistency tested by Cronbach’s alpha coefficients was .86. For practicum course, the constructed validity was tested on 260 nursing students of Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Phraputtabaht. The principle component factor analysis with varimax rotation conducted for factor loading. The four factors including constructed the cultural knowledge, convinced cultural skills, demonstrated practical model, and supported cultural encounter, were explaining 79.09 % of variance. The internal consistency tested by Cronbach’s alpha coefficients was .93. These instruments are benefit for nurse instructors to confirm their abilities for enhancing their student’s achieving the cultural competences.
