Abstract
The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to examine the effect of art group therapeutic program on well- being in elderly with type II diabetes mellitus and depression. Study participants were 24 elders with type II diabetes and depression, aged between 60-79 years old, who received care at Health Promotion Hospitals in Tatakeab district, Chachoengsao province. Participants were randomly assigned into experimental group and control group equally. The experimental group received therapeutic program that was developed from Watson’s Human Care Theory, Dupy well-being concept, and Bovornkitti therapeutic art model. The experimental group received 60 to 90-minutes program in 6 sessions, 2 sessions weekly. The control group received routine nursing care. The Dupy well-being scale was employed to evaluate the outcome of program participation. Descriptive statistics, 2-ways repeated measure ANOVA and multiple comparison test by Bonferroni method were employed to analyze the data.
The results demonstrated the different mean scores of well-being between experimental group and control group at post-test and 1-month follow-up at p-level <.001. Additionally, the mean well-being scores in the experimental group at pre-test and post-test were also found to be different at p-level <.001. However, the mean well-being scores at post-test and at 1-month follow-up were not different. Findings suggest that nurses and health care providers should employ the art group therapeutic program to promote well-being in older adults with type 2 diabetes and depression.
