Abstract
This survey research aimed to study relationships between knowledge, attitude and amount of energy gained from junk food and nutritional status of high school students in Surin province. Participants were 429 high school students selecting by a cluster sampling technique. Research instruments included a development assessment tool and a junk food consumption behavior questionnaire that the researchers developed. Data collection was carried out during March 2017 and April 2017. Data analysis was completed to obtain means, percentages and standard deviations. Chi-Square test was used.
Results indicated that most students (74.1%) had a high level of junk food-related knowledge. 81.1% had a moderate attitude toward junk food. All participants (100%) had junk food consumption behavior. The majority of them (57.6%) reported a small group of junk food consuming. In addition, the relationship between nutritional status and energy intake from junk food was significantly correlated at 0.05 level. Most respondents with normal nutritional status, 68%, received less energy from junk food. The level of knowledge and attitudes about junk food did not correlate with the amount of energy received from junk food.
This study showed that even though all students consume junk food, students with good nutrition gained less energy from junk food. Therefore, nurses who play a role in promoting child health and other related parties should play a role in supporting food shop, both inside and outside the school, to distribute more healthy food. This will reduce the students' access to junk food.
