Informal workers’s families, especially home-base workers, face many health hazards and are lacking in work related social security. This research was undertaken to describe and study family health status and related factors among home-based steel pipe workers and their families. Data was collected from 211 families in Tambon Tanod, Nonsung district, Nakhonratchasima province during February 2011. Data was collected via

interview and questionnaires and an additional work environment assessment was done. The statistical analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, Independent t-test, One-way ANOVA, Pearson’s Correlation Coefficients and Multiple Regression Analysis.

The results showed that 70.6% of family health status scores were at a high level. Work involved frequent

lifting, carrying, towing, and dragging of heavy items. 48% of workers worked more than 8 hours per day. Most (82.9 %) of the home-based working environments had a low level of safety. Adequacy of income, health and welfare affected family health status with statistical significance (p-value <0.05). Factors that were positively related to family health status with statistically significant (p-value <0.05) include number of family members, family income, and working environment. Number of hours worked per day was negatively correlated with family health status with statistical significance (p-value <0.05). It was found that physical environment offers the best explanation of variance of the family health status. Psychosocial environment, adequacy of income, and number of hours worked per day can jointly predict the family health status of home-based steel pipe worker by about 39%.

These findings suggest that home-based work environments should be assessed for risks by public health nurses and multidisciplinary personnel. Identification of risks and subsequent interventions can improve home-based works and working environments, which in turn could result in better health for home-based workers and their families.
