The prevalence of alcohol use disorders and psychiatric comorbidity in Thailand: national epidemiological survey 2008

บทคัดย่อ

Objective To examine the prevalence, correlation, and psychiatric comorbidity of alcohol use disorders (AUD) in Thai people.

Materials and Methods National epidemiological survey 2008 database was derived from face-to-face interview from 17,140 Thai population aged 15-59 years old selected by stratified threestagecluster sampling, interviewed by trained psychiatric professionals using Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I) - Thai Version. The weight proportion data was using for analysis.

Results Prevalence of 12-month AUD were 10.9%, whereas 4.2% was alcohol abuse and 6.6 % was alcohol dependence. AUD was most high prevalent among northern Thai, male, young adult (25-34 years old), and single. The point prevalence of psychiatric comorbidity of AUD was 7.1% with females more than males. Affective disorders group was more prevalence in comorbidity, following with anxiety disorders group and psychotic disorders group, respectively. Female with alcohol abuse were high risk of suicide than the one with alcohol dependence, conversely with male.

Conclusion The high prevalence of AUD and psychiatric comorbidity among Thai including the affective disorders group should be considered for the planning of surveillance and managed health care system.
