Guideline for electroconvulsive treatment

Objective To develop a guideline for electroconvulsive treatment.

Materials and Methods This guideline was developed from October 2010 to May 2011 and divided into 3 phases. Phase 1, starting from October to November 2010, was to sound out the expectation of the Srithanya staff. Phase 2, December 2010, was to discuss with other hospitals to draft the fi rst development plan and to carry out the initial trial. Phase 3, February to March 2011 was to revise the fi rst draft and carry out the second trial. Evaluation had been made after a focus group interview with Srithanya personnel involving in ECT and a conclusion of the questionnaire sent out to 7 hospitals.
The qualitative analysis was achieved through content analysis.

Results Phase 1, there were 62 personnel indicated their expectation and requirement. Phases 2, the fi rst guideline draft was tried out in 14 patients. Then information was exchanged with other hospitals in order to revise the guideline. Phase 3, the revised draft was applied to 34 patients. Complications were detected on 7 cases. From the focus group discussion, personnel became more confi dent in their service and had a clear standa rd for decision making. Feedback form 7 hospitals agreed with the revised draft and made a few comments fi nalize the guideline and led to the current guideline.

Conclusion The guideline for ECT was completed with help from experienced frontline personnel. Content knowledge and exchange of information with other hospitals had been reviewed for a safety ECT service.
