บทคัดย่อ

Objective: To present methodology, field procedure and data management of the 4th Thai national mental health survey in 2013 (TNMHS 2013).

Materials and methods: The TNMHS 2013 is a cross-sectional survey assessing representative household samples of Thai population ageing 18 and over using a stratified four-stage probability non-replacement sample method with regions and Bangkok as primary strata. All respondents were face-to-face interviewed by trained interviewers for their common mental health problems and quality of life using WMH-CIDI 3.0 (World Mental Health-Composite International Diagnostic Interview 3.0), Thai version and EQ-5D-5L (European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions-5 Levels). Additionally, respondents ageing 60 and over were also administered with the MMSE-Thai 2002 (Mini-Mental State Examination) to ascertain the level of cognitive impairment. Correspondingly in households with children ageing between 4 and 16, the parent version of SDQ (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire) was similarly rated by the respondents to assess behaviors of a random child living in the same household. Strict field monitoring and supervisions were enforced to ensure the quality of data collection and management according to the world mental health survey guide.

Result: Of the specified 6,360 representative household samples, 4,878 households were eligible and a total of 4,766 respondents, one from each household, agreed to participate. In all, 4,727 (response rate 74.3%) completed the WMH-CIDI and EQ-5D-5L, in which 1,356 and 1,948 also completed the MMSE and SDQ for parents respectively.

Conclusion The TNMHS 2013 is the first national mental health survey in Thailand that adopted the instrument and procedures of the world mental health survey in its entirety.  The results from this survey will provide essential information to help in the planning and development of Thailand's health policies and will further the understanding of current psychiatric epidemiological landscape within ASEAN and globally beyond.
