Stigma reduction strategies of mental illness

บทคัดย่อ

Objective  Thestudy was aimed to review stigma intervention for mental illness.       

Materials and methods  A systemic review of stigma intervention related to mental illness was conducted. The search included original and review articles from Google search, PubMed from 2000 to 2015 and search terms were stigma, mental illness and intervention. The other search was e-theses of Chiang Mai University all and search term was stigma.                            

Results  A multilevel approach to stigma and public health of Cook’s was used as a conceptual framework for this review. Three levels of an ecological system included intrapersonal, interpersonal, and structural level. Two approaches of intrapersonal-level intervention targeted individual with mental illness were cognitive reconstruction of stigma; and stigma acceptance and enhance coping with stigmatized stereotype. Two strategies of interpersonal-level interventions were education and contact-based intervention. Education was conducted both dyadic and small group. In the structural level intervention was to foster environments that improve accessibility of individual diversity with mental illness and stigma reducing campaign.

Conclusion Three levels stigma reducing strategies had contradicting results especially intrapersonal level. All approaches help the organizations who are responsible for stigma reduction develop appropriate de-stigma programs in the future.
