Objective To determine the effects of weight control program in weight gain schizophrenic patients receiving clozapine.

Meterials and methods The randomized controlled trial was conducted in 58 schizophrenic patients receiving clozapine and body mass index (BMI) equal ormore than 23 kg/m2. Patients were allocated to either a control group (n = 30) receiving routine services or to an intervention group (n = 28) having a weight control program. The program comprised a motivation interview with the patients to induce behavior change. Education on nutrition and exercise was given. Discussed and set plan with the patients for every month and lasted for 6 months. Changes from baseline in the following parameters were compared between the groups: body weight, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumferences by t-test.

Results The maximum weight lost which found in the intervention group was 12 kgs. BMI was significant reduced from baseline. Four patients in the intervention
group could reduce BMI from baseline to less than 23 kg/m2 (number needed to treat = 7). The waist circumferences reduction was not significant different from the control group. Amount of patients in the intervention group was satisfied with benefit and necessities of program were 21 and 27.

Conclusion The weight control program for management weight gain from clozapine could reduce body weight effectively. The satisfactions were at medium to high level.
