Smoking Behavior of secondary A Case study of one school in Khonkean Municipality at Mung, Khonkaen

Abstract

This cross sectional descriptive study aimed to explore behavior and factors associated with smoking behavior of the lower secondary school students in one schoolin Khonkaen province. Participants were 285 students. Data were collected by questionnaires validated for content validity and reliability testing and analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, maximum, minimum Chi-Square Test, Odds Ratio and 95 % CI

The results revealed that 29.1 %(95% CI:  23.91 to 34.77) of students used to smoke cigarettes and 18.2 %(95% CI: 13.93 to 23.22) of them have been smoking. Participants had their knowledge of cigarette smoking was at a moderate level of 50.5 percent, with the average point of 8.56(S.D. = 2.11). Regarding their attitude toward smoking, it was at a high level of 79.3%, with the average point of 3.98 (S.D. = 0.47). In terms of the analysis of the relationship between related factors and smoking habits, there were age(OR=4.77, 95%CI: 2.30 to 9.78, p-value <0.001), education levels(OR=3.95, 95%CI: 1.68 to 9.85, p-value = 0.002), closing to smokers (OR= 2.09, 95%CI: 1.01 to 4.62,p-value = 0.034) and attitude(OR=2.21, 95%CI: 1.05 to 4.49,p-value = 0.018) of students that had significant relationship.The results of this study suggest that dangerous of smoking should be more given for students by the cooperation of health related organizations to increase the awareness of lower secondary school students.
