Abstract

This study is a quasi-experimental research with a two-group pretest-posttest design. The objective is to examine the effect of a video modeling program promoting social motivation on the social skills of school-aged autistic children. The sample was specifically selected based on predetermined criteria, consisting of 42 school-aged autistic children with social skill deficits, divided into an experimental group and a control group, each with 21 participants. The research instruments are divided into two parts: 1) the experimental tool, which includes 1. The video modeling program to promote social motivation 2) Data collection instruments include 1. Observation form for social skills of school-aged children with autism 2. The social motivation assessment using the SSDS 1.0 (Stanford Social Dimensions Scale) showed content validity indices of .89 and .98 for the social skills observation and social motivation assessment, respectively. The reliability was .92 and .92. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test statistics.

The study found that school-aged autistic children who received the video modeling program to promote social motivation had an average social skills score of 13.81 (SD = 2.63) higher than before participating in the program, which had an average score of 10.24 (SD = 1.89) significantly at the .05 level (t = -8.82). When comparing the average social skills scores after the experiment between the experimental group and the control group, it was found that the group that received the program had an average score of 13.81 (SD = 2.63) higher than the group that received standard care, which had an average score of 9.38 (SD = 1.46) significantly at the .05 level (t = 6.60). Therefore, the video modeling program to promote social motivation can be used as a guideline to enhance the social skills of school-aged children with autism.
