Abstract

Patients diagnosed with colon and rectal cancer that has spread to the spinal cord, with a tumor pressing on the area may experience pathological blood vessels and nerves in the legs and feet. This may result in cramp-like numbness and reduced sensation in the feet, making it difficult for the patient to walk and increase the risk of falling. If the problem is not properly relieved or corrected, the impact on patient daily life may lead to suffering. This article presents a case study of a colon and rectal cancer patient who received chemotherapy and experienced paresthesia. Additionally, the symptom management model is integrated to help alleviate patient numbness to promote comfort, contentment, and improved life quality by providing advice on symptom relief through diet and exercise at the hospital and domicile. After advice was offered for one week, follow-ups were done by telephone.

Results were that after receiving advice on diet and exercise, the patient’s paresthesia was unchanged. Post-chemotherapy, the patient no longer experienced paresthesia. The patient was able to review and apply the advice provided by planning meal and exercising three times weekly with no negative side effect.
