The Expertise in Faculty Practice for People with Schizophrenia in Community

Abstract

The expertise in faculty practice holds significant importance as the nursing instructor, as it exemplifies the utilization of knowledge, the accumulated experience and the expertise in providing health services to people, families and communities. As the nursing instructor who did faculty practice that was aimed to utilize the experience in nursing practice and knowledge to care for 9 people with Schizophrenia who were under supervised by Public Health Service Center, Surat Thani Municipality, Center 4 Bueng Khun Thale, Surat Thani Province. The subjects were recovered with symptomatic, performing activity daily living, relationship and social functioning, taking the medication and follow up regularly. Some cases were in the residual phase with poor activity daily living, impaired relationship and social functioning, difficulty in taking medication and unsustainable treatment. The nursing instructor cared the people with Schizophrenia by the dimensions of rehabilitation and therapeutic, therapeutic used of self, therapeutic relationship, mental status examination, presenting reality and psychoeducation. The psychoeducation included the compliance in treatment, preliminary management in recurrence and medication problems, concurrent treatment of schizophrenia and physical illness, and referral system. The nursing instructor also pushed the positive reinforcement, self-esteem improvement and empowerment for cooperative health care, enhancing their overall well-being with families, communities and society. By the expertise in faculty practice, the people with Schizophrenia would self-care, enhance their overall well-being in community. The nursing instructor is challenged and enhances the faculty practice for people with Schizophrenia in community, then expands to other mental illnesses. Furthermore, the faculty practice is to demonstrate the expertise in area of mental health and psychiatric nursing.
