Abstract

Acute cerebral ischemia results in cerebral hypoxia and subsequent cerebral necrosis which elevates mortality rates. Survivors may have disabilities that affect their and their family’s lifestyle. This article aims to present the roles of nurses and multidisciplinary teams to care, under nursing standards, for patients with acute cerebral ischemia, helping patients to undergo this critical phase safely, to be discharged and rehabilitated at home, and to have quality of life. The core content focuses on nursing roles in caring for patients physically and mentally from admission to discharge from a hospital. Those include roles in screenings, neurological assessments, intracranial pressure control, blood pressure management, respiratory care and oxygen administration, fluid balance, dietary considerations, excretion management, and physical mobility. For health education, before discharge, we provide suggestions for patients and caregivers based on the health belief model to assess risk and health beliefs that raise the perceived susceptibility of having acute cerebral ischemia. In addition, we provide information for transferring patients to suitable healthcare facilities.
