Abstract

Road traffic accidents are a major public health problem associated with high rates of injury and mortality. An effective triage system is therefore essential to reduce adverse outcomes and improve the quality of care in emergency departments. This quasi-experimental study aimed to compare waiting time and triage accuracy between a control group and an experimental group using the Ministry of Public Health Emergency Department Triage (MOPH ED Triage) system in combination with severity-based care and ISBAR communication, and to compare professional nurses’ knowledge and skills before and after training and implementation of the system in the emergency department of a general hospital. The sample consisted of 102 patients, divided into a control group (n=51) receiving standard triage care and an experimental group (n=51) receiving triage using the MOPH ED Triage system, and 20 professional nurses. Research instruments included a demographic data form, a waiting time record form, a triage accuracy assessment form, and a knowledge and skills assessment for nurses. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests for waiting time and nurses’ knowledge and skills, and chi-square tests for triage accuracy. The results showed that the experimental group had a significantly shorter waiting time than the control group (t=8.10, p<.001). Triage accuracy was also significantly higher in the experimental group (χ²=6.90, p<.05). Additionally, nurses’ knowledge and skills scores after the intervention were significantly higher than before the intervention (t=3.85 and t=5.41, p<.001), respectively. These findings suggest that the MOPH ED Triage system improves triage efficiency and accuracy. It can be applied as a standard guideline to improve the quality of emergency care for road traffic accident patients.
