Abstract

Introduction: Adolescence is the pivotal stage between childhood and adulthood, enabling easy access to various media. Thai public health prioritizes the health literacy of populations, a crucial indicator of health behavior.

Research objectives: This study aimed to explore factors predicting the relationship between health literacy and preventive behaviors pertaining to sexual risk among adolescents.

Research methodology: Using a predictive correlation model, data was collected from 275 high school students in Samut Prakan Province from December 2021 to March 2022. An adapted health literacy assessment questionnaire was used to collect data. Data were analyze using descriptive statistics, Chi-square, Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient, and Multiple Logistic regression analysis.

Result: Findings revealed a relatively high level of health literacy (62.90%) and a moderate level of preventive behaviors against sexual risk (50.50%). Significant correlations were found between preventive behaviors and sexual risk (p<.05). Five factors were identified as predictors of adolescent sexual risk prevention (p<.001), accounting for 16.10% of the variance at statistical significance at the .001 level.

Conclusion: The covariates influencing adolescent sexual risk prevention were sex, substance and drug use, awareness of physical and mental health, access to health information and services,
and the provision of information and activities for health.

Implication: This study suggests the application of media development to promote health information and activities for adolescents, aiming to decrease the impact of risky sexual behaviors.
