Abstract

Introduction: The project of producing nurses for developing health of people in boarder provinces was developed to honor Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra, the Royal Grandmother. The government allocates 500 civil servant positions for nurses who will graduate from the project to work at health centers in the boarder provinces. Thailand Nursing and Midwifery Council has supported the project by set up an orientation using simulated family system extra-curriculum activities to promote humanized health care attitude and deep connection with hometown for the students in the project.

Research objective:  To explore experiences of nursing students in the project of producing nurses for developing health of people in boarder provinces followed the footstep of the royal grandmother toward the integration of simulated family system in extra-curriculum activities.

Research methodology: This study was qualitative study. The participants were purposively recruited 47 nursing students in the project of producing nurses for developing health of people in boarder provinces followed the footstep of the royal grandmother. Data were collected using experience record using three baskets reflection technique.

Results: Nursing students reflected their experiences in aspect of self-development. They have developed their listening skills, assertiveness, team-working, creative thinking, and humanized health care attitude. They also expressed their commitment and values to nursing profession, recognized professional network and deep connection with their hometown.  

Conclusion: The Integration of simulated family system in extra-curriculum activities could promote nursing students to develop team-working, creative thinking, humanized health care attitude, and family-liked relationship among nursing students in the project.

Implication: Nursing educational institutes could apply a simulated family system in extra-curriculum activities, especially in an orientation period to promote team-working, creative thinking, humanized health care attitude, and family-liked relationship among nursing students.
