Factors Related to Surgical Site Infection Prevention Practices of Operating Room Nurses

Abstract

              Operating room nurses are the key personnel to prevent surgical site infection (SSI). This descriptive correlation study aimed to examine the relationship between knowledge, attitude, work experience, communication within the surgical team and SSI prevention practices among operating room nurses. The samples included 86 operating room nurses from a hospital in Chiang Mai. Data were collected between January to July 2020 using a questionnaire consisting of five parts: demographic information, SSI prevention practices, knowledge, attitude and communication within the surgical team of SSI prevention practices of operating room nurses. The instrument demonstrated content validity indices ranging from 0.97 to 1.00 and reliability coefficients ranging from 0.71 to 0.89. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman rank correlation coefficient statistics.
            The findings revealed that the majority of participants were female (98.80%) with an average age of 38.94 years. Most participants held a bachelor’s degree (90.70%) and had an average work experience of 16.35 years. The majority of the participants demonstrated high levels of knowledge, attitudes, team communication in the operating room, and practices related to the prevention of surgical site infections, at 66.30%, 97.70%, 93.00%, and 100.00%, respectively. It was also found that communication in the operate team to SSI prevention practices was positively correlated at a moderated level with SSI prevention practices (rs = 0.453, p < 0.001), but the knowledge, attitude, and experience were not correlated with SSI prevention practices.
          The study demonstrated that effective communication within the surgical team is a key factor in enhancing surgical site infection (SSI) prevention practices. The findings can serve as essential evidence for planning and implementing strategies to improve the quality of care for surgical patients.
