The review of clinical studies on acupuncture treatment of knee arthritis caused by osteoarthritis

Abstract
Knee osteoarthritis (KOA), especially the degeneration of the knee bones, causes inflammation. It is more common in middle-aged and elderly people. The main clinical symptoms are chronic pain from movement, pain at night or in the morning, limited flexion which affects the quality of life of patients. Western medicine emphasizes treatment with medicine, arthroscopic surgery and injecting sodium hyaluronate into the knee joint cavity. Chinese medicine has a variety of treatment methods, but the most commonly used is acupuncture along with other methods. There is a lot of research evidence supporting that acupuncture is beneficial in treating knee arthritis caused by osteoarthritis. Therefore, acupuncture may be an alternative for patients who refuse surgery and medication. Thus, the authors are interested in researching and collecting information about the treatment of knee arthritis caused by osteoarthritis. Nowadays, acupuncture commonly used along with various treatment methods, such as acupuncture with the principle of reflex points (positive reaction), acupuncture and electrical stimulation, warm acupuncture, warm acupuncture combined with electrical stimulation, acupuncture combined with Tui na, acupuncture combined with Chinese medicine, fire acupuncture and acupuncture in combination with other treatment methods.
