Effectiveness and safety of Biyan Keli in Hua Chiew TCM Clinic patients with allergic rhinitis: a retrospective study

Abstract

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common disease in Thailand and all around the world; can affect all genders and ages. Thailand has increasing AR incidence due to pollution and lifestyle changing. Through 25th year that Huaqiao TCM clinic is open the number of AR patients is increasing year by year. So Huaqiao TCM clinic has developed Tongqiao Biyanpian and Linggan Wuwei jiangxintang from decoction to granule form give the name “Biyan Keli” and used it for the treatment of patients with allergic rhinitis in the clinic, but there has been no clinical research in Thailand for the effectiveness and safety. This study purpose was to assess the effectiveness and safety of Biyan Keli in AR patient. This study collected allergic rhinitis patients using Biyan Keli information from Huachiew TCM clinic medical record databases. Starting from January 2020 to August 2021 male and female patients who met inclusion criteria were recruited. Patients provided symptomatic data before and after receive Biyan Keli for 4 weeks duration, It was found that the assessment score between week 0 and week 4 of the symptoms show the significant difference (p<0.05) indicating the improvement of symptoms. Approximately 33.33% of patients had adverse drug reaction such as dry throat, hot flushes, palpitations, dry nasal passage. The results concluded that Biyan Keli could relieve allergic rhinitis symptom during the study despite the occurence of dry throat, hot flushes, palpitations, dry nasal passage as adverse drug reaction. Prospective study should be performed for further assessment of its effectiveness and safety.
