Rapid Progression of Silicosis in a Stone Crusher Operator: A Case Report of Retrospective Radiographic Review

Silicosis is a significant occupational lung disease and public health concern caused by the inhalation of silica dust in the workplace. This report presented a case study of a 58-year-old male stone crusher operator. His initial annual chest radiograph was reported as normal; however, one year later, he developed respiratory symptoms and was subsequently diagnosed with silicosis. The disease progressed rapidly, leading to complications, and the patient passed away five years later. A retrospective review revealed that abnormalities consistent with silicosis were already presented in the initial annual radiograph. This case highlighted the critical importance of upgrading health surveillance standards, particularly by involving certified specialists for radiographic interpretation, to ensure accurate early diagnosis. This must be coupled with the strict enforcement of immediate removal from exposure sources upon detection to slow disease progression and prevent avoidable loss.
